To Erica Christian, a parent is a parent regardless of gender.

"I like making sure the court actually recognizes that children need both of their parents and ensuring they are looked at as parents whether they are a man or a woman," she said.

Her experience as a Guardian ad Litem helps her when it comes to custody battles and provides a real benefit to her clients.

"I'm able to prepare my client better when meeting with a Guardian ad Litem because I know what they are looking since I am one," Ms. Christian said.

In fact, Ms. Christian recently had a client who was awarded sole custody and primary placement of his children while "making sure the kids had the least amount of exposure to the trauma of the situation."

Recognizing that this is a difficult time in your life, it is important to have an advocate to protect your interests both in the present and in the future.

Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication and Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin, graduating with academic distinction.

Experience

Prior to joining Cordell & Cordell, Ms. Christian was a family law and children’s law litigator. Her experience included working with divorce and paternity actions, post-judgment actions, guardianships, child in need of protection or services actions, domestic abuse and harassment restraining orders, and enforcement of orders through contempt.

She was a private bar intake attorney with the Milwaukee County Children’s Court. Also, Ms. Christian is a Guardian ad Litem and has experience in same-sex and domestic partnership litigation.

Volunteer Work

Ms. Christian does pro bono work for same-sex and domestic partnership litigation. She also serves as a judge for mock trials at local high schools. Ms. Christian is a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
