The concept of helping people maintain their families even if they are going through a difficult divorce is what Cherlyn Crosby found appealing about family law.

"Family is the root of everything in your life," she said. "So many people fail to realize the importance of maintaining a family. Families don’t go away just because two people are getting divorced.”"

Ms. Crosby has experience in mediation and as a certified mediator, a background that has helped tremendously in her practice.

"Essentially I was taught how to listen to the problem and assist the parties in reaching a resolution," she said. "Using that idea in divorce allows the parties to work together to reach a resolution, which often allows them to begin the long process of forgiving each other and working together for the sake of their children."

In the business of divorce law, Ms. Crosby said an attorney has to have empathy in order to understand the client’s perspective and help them.

"If you can’t empathize with what they are going through then you will not be able to address their concerns," she said.

She participated in the Cooley Mediation clinic handling small claims mediations for the circuit court. Subsequently, Ms. Crosby became a certified general civil mediator in Michigan.

She was also a legislative intern with the American Civil Liberties Union where she researched and drafted legislation, screened incoming clients for possible civil liberties cases, and lectured on a variety of different issues.
