Tamara Hoffstatter's initial interest in family law derives from a desire to protect kids.

In her early years as an attorney, her work involved predominantly around abuse, neglect and terminations of parental rights that were often intertwined with companion divorce cases.

"It seemed that so often, the best interests of the children were not recognized," Ms. Hoffstatter said. "I intend to use my skills as a strong trial attorney to ensure the best interests of the children are recognized in divorces, and to also make sure the legal system realizes it is in the best interest of the children to preserve the relationship between father and child, whenever possible."

Ms. Hoffstatter said her true passion is understanding her client, so that his case becomes her own.

"I make the client understand that when I am working with him, there is nothing else that is more important or interesting to me than his life," she said.

When listening and observing the client explain anything and everything that he feels is important to his case, Ms. Hoffstatter said she takes mental notes of a client’s demeanor, changes in personality as different topics are discussed, and the way in which the client responds to issues that she raised.

"These practices are also beneficial when dealing with opposing counsel, mediators, or judges," she said. "By doing these things, I am able to craft the perfect approach to achieve the best results for the client."

Education

Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Iowa; Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law.

Associations

National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys, National Association of Subrogation Professionals, Association of Credit and Collection Professionals.

Experience

Prior to joining Cordell & Cordell, Ms. Hoffstatter worked in a trial-based practice. She spent six years trying jury and bench trials in commercial and insurance litigation. Before that, she litigated jury and bench trials in personal injury, worker’s compensation, criminal defense, and family law cases.

Ms. Hoffstatter is a contributing faculty speaker and author for the National Business Institute.

Volunteer Work

Ms. Hoffstatter has previously handled past pro bono divorce work, as well as estate planning for same-sex couples and parents.
